Little Free Library and Reading Room

You are here

Thanks to a tremendous response, we now have a sufficient number of books for our Reading Room and little free libraries. If you'd like  to donate, please hang on to your books for now - as we'll probably need to replenish stocks in the not-too-distant future. In the meantime, we could really do with another bookcase to handle what's come in!

Please visit our Little Free Library! It’s free – there's no cost to join, or borrow...and no late fines! It's a place where neighbours come to bring and borrow books and it operates on the basis of donations.

How does it work? There is a sign-out sheet – simply write your name, the date, and the title of the book you took out. There's no due date. Just bring the book back when you’re done. The books will be stamped with the Alex House logo, to help you remember where you got them.

The first Little Library is located by the Alexandra Community Garden. We obtained a grant from the City of Surrey to help beautify the space, and it's the perfect location to enjoy the garden and stretch out on the grass with a good book. The second location is by the native plant garden – another beautiful spot to sit and enjoy nature.  A larger library and reading area is located in the Media Room (second floor above the Dining Hall). This is open Tuesdays, 1-3pm and is staffed by volunteers. It's a place to sit and relax with a book on wet or cold days, meet neighbours, and socialize. The books there will form a nucleus from which we will draw books for the small, outdoor libraries.

We accept contributions of good quality hard and soft-cover books - novels, biographies, histories, humour, kids’ books, cook books, books on nature or popular science, how-to books, self-help books, books on current affairs - basically, books people want to read! We are especially interested in obtaining books of interest to newcomers to Canada, including adults who are just beginning to learn English. Please don’t donate something you wouldn’t want to read yourself. No technical books, nothing too esoteric, and nothing inappropriate. And please don’t bring anything that is falling apart. We want the library to be an attractive place to all our neighbours!

Finally, please don’t bring boxes of five to ten good ones. You can always donate more in the future. We have limited space, and want to have a mix from as many different sources as possible. Interested? Drop off your selections at the office, 2916 McBride Ave, or contact Neil Fernyhough, Coordinator of Community Programs, at 604-535-0015 ext 236, or, for more information. As mentioned above, we are not accepting any more donations at this time. Please watch this space - we'll let you know when we have room for more!
